VLUE Is Up 44% YTD. One Stock Is Doing Most of the Work.

June 9, 2026·3 min read·ChartOdds

iShares MSCI USA Value Factor ETF (VLUE) is the top U.S. large-cap value ETF by performance this year. 44% YTD. That follows a 32.66% gain in 2025. Back-to-back strong years for a fund most investors ignore.

The explanation is not complicated. Micron Technology now holds over 21% of the fund. One stock. Over a fifth of the portfolio. When MU runs, VLUE runs with it.

What VLUE Actually Screens For

VLUE is not a diversified value basket. It targets stocks trading at cheap valuations relative to fundamentals. Price-to-book, price-to-earnings, enterprise value-to-cash flow. The fund also happens to hold names with strong earnings growth rates. That part is incidental.

The methodology is explicit: VLUE is about deep value and cash flow generation. Growth is a byproduct of buying cheap. It is not the strategy. Long-term holders who expect consistent growth exposure will eventually be wrong about what they own.

Concentration Risk Is the Real Story

A 21% single-stock weight in an ETF is significant. It means VLUE's trajectory is tied to Micron's trajectory more than the "value factor" framing implies. The valuation ratios across the broader portfolio look attractive. But if MU reverses, the fund feels it before the other holdings matter.

The 2025 and 2026 YTD numbers are real. They reflect the fund doing what it is designed to do: load up on beaten-down, cash-generating names and wait. Micron fit that profile. It ran. VLUE benefited. That is the entire story.

What This Means for Traders

  • VLUE's 44% YTD is not a pure value-factor story. It is a concentrated position in Micron that paid off. Understand what you are buying before attributing it to methodology.
  • The core portfolio thesis is intact. Cheap valuations, strong cash flows. But the Micron weight is the variable that controls near-term performance, not the broader basket.
  • ChartOdds earnings data on MU shows whether the stock carrying this fund has fundamental support behind it or is trading on momentum alone.
